Inspiration
This collection of separates was created during Jess Fox’s post-secondary career. It pulls inspiration directly from the photo below of Alberta’s Badlands. The imagery, shapes, textures, and color all link directly into the designs. Fox took an “everything AND the kitchen sink approach to these pieces, but they each hold a piece of Alberta and its western metropolis.
The inspiration for these pieces’ design was to blend modern shapes and intricate layers, techniques, and paneling together with classic westernwear ideals to create avant-garde garments.
The secondary inspiration for this collection is all things equine. Fox pulled specific inspiration from her four-legged friends back home and focused on capturing their complexity and juxtaposition of strength vs. grace. This is shown throughout the work by varying colors, shapes, and fluidity of fabrics.

Design Development
When working on this collection a total of 15 looks were proposed. Fox decided to take her favorite stand-alone pieces and put them together. to combat the over-the-top look of these two pieces together, Fox created a quick pink mini-skirt to go with the jacket and sourced multiple shirts for the pants.
The pant design is an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder pair of overalls, with an oversized fly, a drawstring, two different types of pockets, and lots of color-blocking. The jacket design combined a classic western vest shape with a modern flowing silhouette. It utilized pleats, gathers, patchworking, and intricate stitch detailing. The jacket is one piece, but it is made to look like multiple layers worn together.

Once the final design was established and all technicals were completed, a set of samples were made out of 100% cotton muslin.
